Doré does Dante
2 December 2007
This week we revel in the absorbing splendor of Gustav Doré's visual interpretation of the poet Dante Aligheri's Divine Comedy. The Divine Comedy, a journey by the poet himself as guided by Virgil through Hell, Purgatory and Heaven is considered the central epic poem of Italian Literature. Doré, a 19th Century Frenchman, who is perhaps more famously known for his illustrated bible (which has been a treasure in many a home), took to the idea of illustrating the Divine Comedy in 1855. It was a massive undertaking, not least owing to the rather inconvenient problem that publishers were loath to touch the project for fear that such a large folio would retail at too high a cost. Nevetheless, Doré soldiered on and published the plates and text of the Inferno (Hell) at his own expense in 1861. It was an instant success and many considered that Doré had infact supplanted the venerable Botticelli as the greatest illustrator of Dante. The Purgatorio and the Paradiso were both completed in 1868 and, with a publisher coming to their senses, the complete Divine Comedy was at last published. For anyone even only remotely familiar with Dante's work, the Doré illustrations are a rich introduction to the poet's imaginative visions of the terrors of Hell through to the peace of Heaven.
'Hot Cake' Packaging
Now that it is December, this week we showcase a job which involved the packaging of a Christmas Cake: 'Hot Productions' wanted to impress their clients with tailor-made yuletide gifts. Fruit Cakes were made & packaged in silver tins with imagery showing that the cake was the result of good teamwork.
